Pops and Rugby

Created by Joseph 2 years ago
Pops loved sports, and rugby occupied a special place in his heart. Growing up in Richmond, Pops would come and support the team for which I played (and my Dad coached) on grotty Sunday mornings all over the south east of England. Tournaments and matches against Teddington, London Irish, Sutton & Epsom; come rain or shine, Pops would be there cheering from the sidelines, sometimes heckling the referee or arguing about dubious touchline decisions, always grinning and laughing, enjoying the very amateur matches of the game he loved. Sometimes we'd go to Twickenham Stadium together, and I remember his fierce rivalries with friends over Six Nations match ups, and his voluble but not always tuneful renditions of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". I think often of the Sundays we enjoyed together, his unwavering support and about how much he loved the outdoors, physical activity and competition.
